Can I buy Marketplace health insurance in another state?
Want to buy Marketplace health insurance in another state? As the law exists now, you can only buy health insurance in the state where you maintain your permanent address. Your insurance company may not cover you if you move states and do not report this change in address. (However, it’s important to note that you’re in another state temporarily—for example, a vacation—your plan must cover any life-threatening emergency medical care you need.)
This means if you move out of state, you will likely need new health insurance plan, too. In other words, if you're wondering if you can buy Marketplace health insurance in another state than where you live, the answer is no. If you have Marketplace insurance through the Affordable Care Act, you’ll need to report your move to the Marketplace and then will likely be able to qualify for a 60-day Special Enrollment Period that will allow you to shop for a new Obamacare health plan to obtain insurance coverage in your new home state. You can also shop for a new plan during the Open Enrollment Period. Open Enrollment is from November 1 to January 15.
Want to shop for a new Marketplace plan in your new state following a move? You may qualify for new savings and pricing. Due to the Affordable Care Act, plans from the Health Insurance Marketplace cover pre-existing conditions and preventive care. You can compare prices and shop for a Marketplace plan here. And if you'd like to apply for Medicaid, you can do so here.
