Affordable Care Act and Obamacare FAQ

How does Obamacare work?

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, is the landmark healthcare reform legislation signed by President Barack Obama in March of 2010. Primarily, it ensures that more people have access to more affordable and more comprehensive health coverage. One key part of the Affordable Care Act was the creation of the Health Insurance Marketplace, where you can compare and shop to find an affordable health insurance plan, find out if you qualify for any subsidies to reduce your costs, and see if you’re eligible for Medicaid (free or low-cost care through a joint partnership between the federal government and states) or CHIP.

The Affordable Care Act also established consumer protections, such as making preventive care free for consumers, ensuring you can't be denied coverage due to a pre-existing condition, providing prescription drug coverage, and more.

The Affordable Care Act also established a system of subsidies based on household income (in most states, for those with a household income between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty line), including tax credits to lower the cost of the monthly premiums and cost-sharing reductions to make your health insurance cheaper to use.

Enter your zip code to see Marketplace health plans and prices, and to see if you qualify for any subsidies that would lower the cost of your health insurance coverage.
